There are 14.45-million registered taxpayers in South Africa. They are divided into nine income categories by the National Treasury.

Only 7.89-million of those registered have income high enough to be eligible to pay personal income tax – on the chart, that is everyone except those in the lowest income category of R0 – R96 000.

The taxpayers in the top three income brackets – which is fewer than 1-million people – contribute 60% of the total personal income tax revenue collected by the government. Those are people with an income of R750 000 and above. Among them are 224 959 individuals with incomes of R1.5-million or more, who account for nearly 33% of the personal income tax revenue collected.

Overall, 98% of South Africa’s revenue comes from taxes, with personal income tax contributing 40%.
